Since my last round of Whole30, I’ve been eating about 99% paleo. There have been a few slips here and there:
- Fuddrucker’s french fries. The seasoning they put on those things must have crack in it or something. I suspect they are also spring-loaded, because those suckers just jumped off of the plate and into my mouth. I tried not to chew, or swallow, but the crack-seasoning made me do it.
- A single Skittle during the Taylor Swift concert. Trust me, with all the screaming, we’re lucky it was only one and not the whole box. I also managed to resist the popcorn. It probably helped that they sold Larabars there 🙂
- A sip of a mimosa and 2 chocolate-covered strawberries at brunch on Mother’s Day. I managed to resist all of the other junk on the buffet. Unfortunately I had a headache all day after this, so I paid the price.
- MOAR CHOCOLATE!! But I really paid the price with this one. I ate about half of an 85% dark chocolate bar, and then puked! Not sure if it was the sugar, or something else in there, but now the thought of eating the stuff again makes me feel a little sick to my stomach, so I don’t think there’s any danger of that happening again. Just typing out this list item made me a little nauseated 🙁
I’ve also discovered that I can’t stop at just a few dates. And by dates, I mean the kind you eat, not the kind you go out with. I had to clarify that with my daughter; she thought I was cheating on her buddy. Larabars are made of mostly dates, and they are similarly addictive, so while the food I’m eating is totally alright for paleo, it’s binge food, so I can’t keep it in the house.
Speaking of the little one, over the past few weeks, I’ve been slowly converting her to paleo/primal eating. She’s still eating some junk here and there, but most of her meals have been good, with the exception of her dairy; she loves whole milk, smoked gouda, and Greek yogurt. Considering she won’t eat egg yolks, thinks nut butters are disgusting, and won’t touch guacamole with a 10-foot tortilla, I’m alright with her continuing to have the dairy for now, because she needs to get the fat from somewhere.
She’s also gotten a lot better about trying food, even if she tried it once before and didn’t like it. For example, we had mashed cauliflower for Thanksgiving last year, and she decided that it looked and tasted disgusting, but then last weekend I made it again (with all-paleo ingredients) and she not only gobbled it up, but asked for leftovers for her lunch the next day. She is also trying foods she used to like, and then stopped eating when she started getting picky, like sweet potatoes. I’m hoping guacamole, or at least avocado, will make it back into her diet at some point.
I’m going to try another round of Whole30 starting on May 27, and this time I won’t be doing it alone! If all goes as planned, at least my brother and sister-in-law, and a few friends, will be doing it with me. I’m also going to try to convince my mother to do it with us. Because so many newbies are going to try with me, I’m going to host a “cook-up” over the holiday weekend. More on that in another post!
