I made it to day 26 of my Whole 30.
I’ve been doing a couch to 5K program, and was about halfway through it when my back started to hurt. I don’t think the running was what made my back hurt, but it certainly didn’t help it. A few days after it started to hurt we went camping in cabins, and the beds in those cabins didn’t help my back one bit. So on Saturday, in quite a bit of pain and most likely in need of some extra dopamine, I decided to indulge in some mini Reese’s peanut butter cups. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to awaken the sugar dragon. BIG TIME. Later that night I chose to have some wine, and then some s’mores. The next couple of days I was back on plan, and all was well. But then my back REALLY started to hurt, badly enough that I went to the doctor. She gave me high dose ibuprofen, muscle relaxers, and orders to stop running. The next night I was home alone, feeling a little sorry for myself, and I raided my daughter’s leftover Easter candy.
Now I’ve had “legal” (no sugar/dairy) chocolate a few times during Whole 30, and never binged on it. But with the sugar and dairy, I felt like I couldn’t stop. And then after I finally did manage to stop, I felt bloated. It could have been partly the muscle relaxers, but I felt pretty gross and mush-brained the next day.
So I’m off the sugar-dairy-crack, and back to more or less Whole 30 way of eating while I continue to recover from my back injury. The doctor told me not to run, so I ordered an elliptical trainer for the office to use that instead. I’m hoping to be able to start running again in the next week or so.
